My dad was also quite verbally and emotionally abusive. My mom was not super affectionate, but luckily she also really felt good schooling was of the utmost important. I'm really thankful for that, and it sounds like your dad was too. Something to also focus on and be grateful for. I have found that these small memories help with a bit of forgiveness for the difficult past. It might help you too.
